Clever Crow

Clever Crow by Chris Butterworth

Illustrated by Olivia Lomenech Gill

Winner of the Carnegie Medal 2025 for Illustration

An original non-fiction text that invites us to reframe the way we think about the wonderful Crow. Olivia’s work was shortlisted and subsequently won the Carnegie Medal (2025) for her illustrations.

Illustrations perfectly capture the essence of the written text, creating a seamless synergy between words and pictures. The depiction of the crows invites readers to look again at the bird and see beyond its dark plumage, offering an eye-opening exploration of the varied habitats and habits of the crow family. The overall impact is wild, raw and earthy. Illustrations enhance the text and visually demonstrate the information being given. An example of this is how newspaper print is used to demonstrate the intelligence of the crows. There’s a magpie-like quality in the variety and range of techniques and styles used. Innovative, playful and informative, you’ll never see a crow in the same way!
